July 22, 2026 -- Ephesians 1:7-10 -- What does it mean to call Jesus King?
/People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace, which He lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of His will, according to His purpose, which He set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in Him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:7-10 ESV
Did you know that LeBron James earned the nickname “the King” of basketball? Steven King has been called the King of Horror because of his riveting novels and films celebrating that genre. Aretha Franklin was called “the Queen of Soul”. Funny, isn’t it? I mean very few people would acknowledge a king, like say, King Charles III. But the heart still wants a king. Someone who is accomplished. Someone who is admired. Someone who commands attention. So, in very secular, very worldly ways, people find their own kings and queens and leaders to admire. Unfortunately, such men and women fail. Are very narrow in their scope of ability. Not one of them can bear the weight of adoration and praise. It is crushing. It is undeserved.
Ah, now look, listen, the Bible has crowned the true King of Heaven and Earth. His Name is Jesus. What has He done? Why is He worthy?
In King Jesus believers have their sins forgiven
In King Jesus God’s glorious love and mighty power are revealed
In King Jesus all enemies are defeated as He united Heaven and Earth—that is all things are working out according to God’s perfect plans so that one day all evil will be thrown down, utterly defeated and not even a distant memory.
In King Jesus believers have the power to resist temptation to sin.
In King Jesus believers are given the Holy Spirit so that the Bible becomes rich, interesting, and the one true guide for life.
In King Jesus people are not frightening, despots, bullies, but are either adding to their list of charges which means at the end of time, when He returns as the perfect Judge of all people, they will be thrown into the fires of hell and tormented for eternity. God’s holiness demands that.
In King Jesus believers know their sins have been punished at the cross on His Person, and believers are free to submit to Jesus and serve Him with awe and obedience and love. It is a life of thankful service to the One Who freed us from hell, Who has blessed us with a heavenly Father, and guards us from evil through the Spirit living in us.
In King Jesus the new heavens and the new earth are opened wide and believers know beyond a shadow of a doubt they will spend eternity in the blessedness of His presence.
In King Jesus you are, right now, known by God, and deeply loved.
Blessed are You, God our Father! We praise You with awe and wonder for the gift of Jesus, the King of Glory. Blessed are You, Father and Son, for the great and gracious gift of the Holy Spirit, through Whom we have access to this wide array of blessings. Thank You, Spirit of God, for revealing Jesus to us. Thank You Spirit of God for instructing us through the Bible. Thank You, Spirit of God, for giving us teachers and preachers who explain to us the greatness of our God. Thank You, Triune God, that in Christ Jesus, You are uniting heaven and earth so that one day, with our very own eyes, we will be see and shout, “Living for You, serving You, denying ourselves and our selfish desires, being loved by You and loving You—it was worth it all!” Amen.
