My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the LORD
and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:1-5 ESV
Choose wisdom. Look at the great variety of verbs of seeking, going after, pursuing wisdom. What is the great search all about? It is to find the wisdom of God. It is to seek it like one seeks silver. How does a child know silver (or money) is valuable? He’ll see his parents seeking it out. He’ll hear people he respects talking about it. There will be lectures on how to gather money, invest it, and prepare for retirement. The household will either long for it (because there is never enough) or the household will celebrate and keep what it has. Already at a very young age children are given piggy banks or are encouraged to save. I wonder, is the same effort given to teach children the fear of the LORD and knowledge of the Holy One?
Compare your bible-reading time to the time you spend on your hobbies. Compare your bible reading time to the time you spend watching TV, or movies, or gaming. Compare the time you spend talking with your friends about sports, or fishing, or card-making, or the latest political trends. Now ask yourself, how much time do you spend with them talking about God? About your life in Christ? Your hope for the future in eternity with the Blessed Father? Your life, your actions, your finances show what you really value. Today’s passage is a clear call to return to the ways of God, to invest your efforts, your time and your friendships in knowing God.
MERCIFUL LORD,
