October 30, 2026 -- Day Thirty of Joy: Philippians 4:1

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. Philippians 4:1 ESV

In order to understand this reference better, I looked up a brief commentary by Sinclair Ferguson. This is what he wrote:
The Philippians were his brothers; he loved them and longed for them.
Unlike the shameful things to which the false teachers devoted themselves,
this relationship would last. More than that, it too would be transformed
into something glorious—into Paul’s joy and crown. Heaven, and the
Philippians too, would be his.
Ferguson. “Let’s Study Philippians”, page 96
Just prior to chapter 4, Paul spoke of the things false teachers do: they are enemies of the cross of Christ; their minds are set on earthly things; their god is their belly, they glory in their shame” (3:18-19). Such actions lead to devastation, ruin, and death. While in the moment, false teachers and enemies of God taunt Christians about the “freedom” they enjoy; they are in fact killing themselves and leading others to death.

Ah, but those who are in Christ, have a joy that is not merely an emotion. It is joy that sustains them while fending off the pressures of the world and the temptations of the devil. It is joy that is so anchored in Jesus, that such as are in Christ alter all their living in view of His return. What we see now will one day be transformed when the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ is revealed. Joy is a spiritual gift. Joy has its foundation in Jesus Christ. Joy fills the Christian who anticipates Jesus’ return.

When you, fellow Christian, help others to serve Jesus, to know Him and in loving obedience follow Him, you experience joy. Your joy in Jesus is multiplied in the experience of those you mentor and reflects back to you and you and those among whom you share the love of Jesus have greater joy in Jesus.

Oh Jesus, You are the joy of loving hearts. Father in heaven, You have gifted Your people with heaven’s joy, Jesus. Spirit of the Living God, remove from us any lingering sin, any worldliness or obstinate selfishness which would crush true joy. Spirit of the Living God, increase our capacity for the joy of the Lord and renew in us a holy zeal to share the beauty of Jesus with all those we meet. Grant us, Spirit of God, the treasure of people You bring to us, people whom we can mentor in our precious faith, so that this holy joy is shared and multiplied. Amen.
