January 19, 2019 -- Proverbs 19:27 -- Return to Jesus

Cease to hear instruction, my son,

and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

Proverbs 19:27 ESV

Tomorrow is Sunday. Plan on going to a Scripture-believing, faithful-to-Jesus living church. The only way to grow in true faith is to be instructed in the Word of the Lord.

Earlier in this chapter we read:

"The fear of the LORD leads to life,

and whoever has it rests satisfied." (23)

In Christ we find our reason for living. In Christ we hate our sin more and more and find joy in Him Who is the Desire of all nations. We fear to offend Him, even as a husband who deeply loves his wife will not not do certain things--he fears offending her. He wants her to see and experience only his best. So we, as followers of Christ, fear to offend Him--He has given us so much, He loves us so deeply we give Him our all.

If you have neglected church, if you have strayed from instruction, here is your clear call to return. Welcome back. Come and be instructed. Come and find people who receive instruction and joyfully walk in the way of Jesus. Phone a friend if you are uncomfortable returning by yourself. Invite yourself to go with him or her so that you are not alone.

LORD of Life, thank You for the picture of Scripture, that You stand at the porch of Your house, scanning the horizon, to welcome back prodigal sons and daughters. Thank You that You have the words of knowledge and the gift of life given us in Jesus Christ. Thank You for Your Spirit Who speaks to our hearts teaching us that through Jesus Christ we can call You: Abba, Father. For those who are on the edge of decision whether or not to go to meet with Your people on Sunday, speak to their hearts of the open invitation You offer them. Father in heaven, help us, who regularly fill the pews each Sunday, to be warm and welcoming to each person whom You bring to church. Amen.
