August 19, 2022 -- Hebrews 3:12-14 -- Tackling sin is a communal effort

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.
Hebrews 3:12-14 ESV

Notice the double emphasis on holding tightly to God. First individuals are called to examine their hearts. In line with this ask yourself: Is there some sin that is provoking you and turning you away from God? Look carefully at your thoughts, your words and your actions. Wherever you see sin, root it out in your life. Confess it to God. Kill it before it kills your relationship with God.

Then the second emphasis is on the responsibility of Christians to encourage one another in this precious faith. You need others to check your blind spots and call out sins which are sending rot into your life so that your testimony to Jesus is compromised. A dear friend has the right to challenge you about sin and lead you in the path of righteousness. A close friend will endure your indignation and your bluster as you deny all the evidences of that sin until your persistent, faithful friend's words get past your defenses and you admit your willfulness and your need for healing.

These words are written so that Christ will be shared among the people of God. This letter is an encouragement to every individual believer and also it is encouragement for every congregation of believers to turn to Jesus Christ and find in Him the Truth which sets them free from sin and the death-grip of the devil. Ask the Spirit of God to help you in your own life to clear the debris of sin. Ask the Spirit of God to give you a heart of graciousness that will help you to strengthen the faith of your brothers and sisters in Christ so that all together you will grow in the knowledge of Jesus, holy obedience to Him, and in righteousness that leads others to see Jesus in your life and honour Him.

Father in heaven, as we read the Bible, let Your Spirit jar us out of the lethargy taking hold of us and make us aware of the times we are toying with sin. If the Bible has remained unopened many days, let this be the day of fresh starts and renewed commitment to daily reading. Spirit of God, motivate us to run from sin. King Jesus, as Your Church is gathered by Your Spirit's work in the life of believers, help all of us, in community, to hate our sin more and more. Triune God, teach us to know You better; help us to be obedient and let our lives reflect the righteousness which has been given to us in Jesus Christ, the Captain of Salvation.

August 17, 2022 -- Psalm 75:1-3 -- It is the LORD Who Keeps the Earth Steady

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

We give thanks to you, O God;
    we give thanks, for your name is near.
We recount your wondrous deeds.

“At the set time that I appoint
    I will judge with equity.
When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants,
    it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
Psalm 75:1-3 ESV

The National Physical Laboratory of England noted that on June 29th of this year, the earth had the shortest day on record. It was 1.59 milliseconds off a typical 24 hour day. Interestingly, next to that article was a headline that suggested some millions of years ago the typical earth day was 23 1/2 hours. As you know, if you read this devo-blog regularly, I hold to the Biblical account of creation—some 6,000 years ago God created the heavens and the earth. So, this constant secular teaching strategy of saying “millions” or “billions” of years at every chance possible is merely sinful man repeating sinful lies. And the speculations of what might or might not have happened in these imaginary times are fanciful expressions of rebellious people seeking to break free from the clear teaching of the Creator.

Why mention such things. Well, we live in a world of people who are saying: there will be more hurricanes, because of climate change. There will be this disaster or the next disaster because of this hard-to-pin down monster called climate change. People who do not know God, or refuse to acknowledged Him, are being consistent in their dire predictions. They are afraid of everything because they live in a cold and pitiless universe ruled by change and chance.

This is why the Christian is at odds with the world. Christians give thanks to God, for in Scripture we know that the God Who made the universe also sustains it. He keeps it steady. He has revealed His glorious intentions to make the world a place for Christians to know Him and be guarded in His love until He brings the New Heavens and the New Earth where there will be no more sin, no death, no suffering. Those who refused to acknowledge Him now, while there is ample time and many, many evidences of His goodness, will face eternity in hell.

Jesus Christ is proof of God’s claims. Into all the apparent chaos of history and upheaval of nations, God sent His Son. Though Jesus suffered through-out His life, He lived His life to the glory and praise of His Father. He was, in all circumstances content. No matter what happened to Jesus, He knew God’s Name was near at hand. The Spirit of God provided the link between Jesus’ humanity and Jesus’ relationship with His Father in heaven.

Those who are in Christ, following Him, have the tremendous assurance that their lives are bound up in the merciful care of God. No matter the tumult of nations or the alarmist cries of scientists who predict fearful things because they do not acknowledge the Living God—the followers of Jesus Christ lives in peace. God’s Name is near—He has impressed His Name in our hearts by HIs Spirit; He has given us tongues to declare His goodness revealed so perfectly in Jesus Christ. He has shown us the creation, in Genesis, God made it. He showed us through-out Scripture that creation does His bidding and He sustains it. He has written the end of the story. From the Revelation we know Jesus triumphs. From Romans and Revelation we read that creation will be released from the bondage to sin to which our wrong-doing imprisoned it.

The earth will reach the moment in galactic history for which God has prepared it. Jesus will be revealed. All the living, and all those who had died before His return, will appear before the throne of Jesus. Then Jesus will Judge the nations, and all His judgments will reveal the depths of the Father’s sustaining care and also reveal the Spirit’s beautiful work of drawing believers nearer and nearer to the Faithful Father.

Glorious are You LORD GOD Almighty! Just and true are all Your works. Thank You that Your Name is near to all Who know You. Thank You that You draw near to Yourself all whom You have appointed for eternal life. Thank You that even history declares Your majesty and the splendour of Your work. Renew our confident hope in the promises of this passage, that You keep steady the pillars of the earth and the safety of its inhabitants. Increase our faith, O Father of every good gift, so that our word, our lives and our confidence in You will turn many of our peers from fearfulness at this world to faithful confidence in the Creator of the World. Amen.

August 16, 2022 -- Titus 2:11-14 -- Trained to renounce ungodliness

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, 13 waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Titus 2:11-14 ESV

Notice the order of things. Paul is confirming that God’s saving grace is the starting point. He has rescued His people from destruction, by the work of Jesus Christ on the cross, so that the enemy is disarmed. Now as the people who are saved, it is incumbent on you (your binding obligation) to renounce ungodliness. Isn’t that attention-grabbing?

In your past, as sinners, you embraced ungodliness. Perhaps it was alcohol. Perhaps it was gluttony. Maybe the ungodliness is haughtiness—thinking oneself better than others. Perhaps it is laziness (as Paul noted the Cretans are especially appropriately called lazy as even their own prophet called them such). Sins that used to have free reign in your life don’t just lay down and die when Jesus takes over your life. Cornered and about to be rooted out, sins are pernicious and persistent. The grace of God is powerful; strong enough for your every need. However, Christians need to be trained in righteousness so that they refuse familiar sins and abstain from past wicked habits and instead, live upright, self-controlled and godly lives. This is training. Like a chef following a new recipe, making sure he has all the requirements at hand: the ingredients, the correct temperature, the right sized frying pan to hold all the ingredient, so a man gripped by the grace of God will follow God’s instructions with great care. He will study the Word of God. He will make preparations in his day so that this new life doesn’t collapse and old evils wash out any signs of progress. This is a battlefield. The enemy hates seeing Christians honour the very LORD of Glory Whom he himself despises. So the devil is particularly vicious in his repeated attacks against Christians who are striving to implement self-control in their pursuit of holiness.

God has given to believers the sure hope of eternal life. It is His promise to believers. So do not give up the fight against your own flesh, nor the battle against the world and peers who would scoff and mock and call you back to old sinful ways. Do not lose heart, the devil is already defeated. Recognize his tricks and his deceitful invitations which would drag you back to ungodliness and hopelessness. You serve the King of kings, the LORD of lord, and as such, He is also the Captain of Salvation—He will bring you to victory. Pray for Christ’s victory to take hold of your life. Hate your sin more and more. (That is a choice, an hour to hour decision: I hate this old sin, and I remember how it ruins me!) Find fellow Christians who will hold you accountable to walk in the ways of Jesus Christ and in turn hold them to account also. Use all the tools and gifts God has given you so that you will be zealous for good works and you will persevere in carrying them out in your life.

Jesus, Captain of Salvation, thank You that Your strong arm is leading Your people on to victory. Faithful Father, send Your Spirit, the Counselor, so that Your people will be led in all that is upright and godly. Give holy discernment so that tiny sins, the choices that might seem inconsequential at the moment, will be exposed as the course-altering hateful habits that they are. Such tiny-appearing-sins are trying to find weakness in the armor of God so that they can once again reassert themselves. Thank You, Triune God, that You purify Your people. Thank You, God-Who-Never-Lies, that all Your promises are "yes" and "amen" in Jesus Christ. Shelter Your people in your grace and peace and so prepare them to face the joys and challenges of the day. Amen.

August 15, 2022 -- Psalm 1:1-2 -- What you are planning

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2 ESV

What is the hardest day to stay faithful to God? Is it your regular working day, or is it harder to stay faithful to God when you have a day off and no plans? No doubt it is the second one. Notice what the blessed man (blessed woman, blessed child) does—he meditates on the law of God day and night. In Psalm 2 that word “meditate” is plot or devise. This is critical for understanding this Psalm.

If you have nothing to do, won't it be tempting to just channel flip and watch this and that and find yourself unguarded in your choice of what you are viewing? When you are feeling at loose ends, it is easier to get involved in drama and gossip at home or at work. The heart that is left unguarded, allowed free reign to run to its own devices will devise evil fashioning trouble for itself.

The man who walks in the happiness of God is the one who plots each day. Even a day off is one in which he is aware he is under the watchful eye of His loving Creator. Imagine how different a day off is when someone plans to spend time with God. Includes in his “to do list” as the most important part of the day. Listening to the voice of God as He speaks His love, named Jesus, hearing such love communicated through His Word. What happiness fills the day when the day does not seem pointless, but is always pointing to God the Savior.

Mighty God, the day and the night belong to You, the seasons and the eons, all are Yours. Thank You that not one moment of our lives is empty of sacredness. By the powerful presence of Your Spirit, tune our hearts so that we are planning our days in such a way that woven into its every part is the awareness of Your goodness and love. King Jesus, help us to be fully submitted and obedient to Your command, that all who are Yours would deny themselves, take up their cross and follow You. Amen.

August 13, 2022 -- II Timothy 1-5, 10-15 -- The Holy Spirit Renovation Expert

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
II Timothy 3:1-5, 10-15 ESV

There is a phrase which is often used when I am leading a Christian 12 Step Group: “one is too many, a thousand is not enough”. When our sinful appetites grab hold of us, one drink is too many. Any time the believer opens the door to sin, the self-centred, greedy, sinful nature which otherwise is hibernating in us, awakens, rearing up its ugly head and is prepared to have its unappeasable appetite direct all our activities. Whether it is porn or pork, alcohol or amphetamines once sin has a slight opportunity, it will rush against the slightly open door, and push in to overwhelm the believer. This all seems to make a mockery of the power of God.

This is why fasting was such an important practice in the Old Testament. Jesus affirmed its importance in Matthew 6. When the believer denies himself food for a brief period, a meal, or a day, he realizes his stomach is not in charge. His body is fine without the meal and he learns self-control. The brief pangs of hunger direct the believer to prayer and confidence in God's provision. Such fasting exposes the deceptive urges of sin and shows the believer the power of God to withstand these. When a believer leans into all that is holy and good, spends time with other believers, then all self-deception is exposed. The desire for knowledge leads to a holy impulse to find opportunities to put this knowledge into practice. Such practices become the habits of the heart and life of a believer.

Where sin has flooded in and caused all kinds of damage do not despair. Confess it to God the Father. Know that Jesus Christ has come to disarm the power of the devil and all his wicked accusation. Leave the paths of sin and whatever wicked things have grabbed hold. Trust the Spirit of God is the restoration expert. He takes the flood-of-dissipation damage and He makes such repairs that the glory of God will take hold of your life.

Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name. It is too embarrassing to look up to heaven. It is too sad and frustrating to be at this same place again--confessing the same sin that I confessed yesterday, last week, last year and for the last decade. Thank You, Merciful God, for the promises that as long as day follows night, Your mercies are new every morning. Thank You, God of steadfast love, that as You delight to call out the stars each night and never tire or grow weary of commanding the sun to rise each day, so You delight to heal wounded sinner and never grow weary in applying the radiance of Jesus' work to believers, doing this in the power of Your Holy Spirit. Triune God, take the wreckage of my life and let Your workmanship shine through, so that I am rebuilt to withstand the push of sin and the whole work of renovation You undertake makes my life shine for the glory of God the Creator and Sustainer. Amen.

August 12, 2022 -- II Samuel 13:15 -- Do you really hate sin?

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he loved her.
II Samuel 13:15 ESV

Sin is deceptive. Amnon imagined himself in love with his half-sister Tamar. He was so consumed with his lust for her that he schemed so that he could secretly rape her. The verse which is this morning’s text is Amnon’s state after the rape. He hated her. She was not the object of his love after all. He loved himself. He satisfied his primal urges. She now is disposable in his sight. And his insatiable ego has rendered her vile to himself. His lust now will seek someone or something else. That is the way of sin. It is always deceptive. Always tearing down. Always violating. Always selfish. Always rehearsing wrongs. Always defiling love as God has defined it.

Fellow believer, it is so easy to say, “at least I am not like that wicked, despicable character Amnon”. If that is your response, even it is just a quiet thought which approximates that, beware! The sin of pride is already sending tendrils, like a vine, to choke your faith. Look instead to the absolute standards of God, His holiness, which cannot bear any corruption nor the least sin. His absolute splendor is such that the sinner will be utterly destroyed. When examining how evil and disgusting sin is, look to the perfections of the Living God and you’ll see that, like Amnon, you are beyond wicked. You are deserving of the punishment of damnation and hellfire.

We were dead in our sins and trespasses. Amnon’s sin was public. So much of the time, ours is hidden. Sometimes we even nurture sins in the depths of our dark hearts. Now, the most beautiful lines of Scriptures “but God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:4-5). First know how great your sin is. Understand how mindlessly cruel your own sins are. See how dead you are. Incapable of change. You will see, juxtaposed to this, the great brilliance and incandescent love of the Father, poured out on you in Jesus Christ and sealed in you by the Holy Spirit.

Rejoice. Give thanks to God. Then, as carefully as you examine yourself in a mirror before a date or an important job interview with a potential employer, so carefully, even more thoroughly, examine your mind, your heart and your actions so that sins, whatever they are, may be rooted out. Praise God for His mercy. Walk in the newness of life you have been given. Then, as those who have been set free, call out sin to the sinner, expose it and wherever the conscience is stricken, declare, “But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ!”

The prayer is from Isaiah
You will say in that day:
   I will give thanks to You, O LORD,
   for though You were angry with me,
Your anger has turned away,
   that You might comfort me.
Behold, God is my salvation:
   I will trust and not be afraid;
for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song,
   and He has become my salvation.
With you joy will draw water from the wells of salvation.
And you will say in that day:
Give thanks to the LORD,
  call upon His Name,
make know His deeds among the peoples,
   proclaim that His Name is exalted
Sing praises to the LORD, for He has done gloriously;
   let this be made known in all the earth.
Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitants of Zion,
   for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.
Isaiah 12 ESV

August 10, 2022 -- I Timothy 1:1-2 -- Each one reach one

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
   To Timothy, my true child in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
I Timothy 1:1-2 ESV

Such tenderness in this greeting. Paul is writing to Timothy, his true child in the faith. In the next letter to Timothy, Paul calls him "my beloved child". Paul knew Timothy’s mother and grandmother—women of faith. Timothy’s father, it seems, was not a believer. So Paul stands in as a father-figure, a man of faith to disciple and bless Timothy. What an honoured role that is.

Men of God, women beloved of Jesus, whom are you mentoring? Who is younger in the faith than you are? To whom are you giving special time and attention? You can write an encouraging email. You can send a text with a special bible verse. You can meet up for coffee (or tea or well, you get the idea). Who is lacking a parent in the faith and needs encouragement, prayer and mentoring?

We are always so busy. There are work commitments. There are family commitments. There are lawns to mow and “to do” lists waiting to be completed. However, Christians know our greatest responsibility and highest joy is communicating our precious faith. It is Jesus' final command: "go and make disciples of all nations". As you teach others, your own faith is confirmed. As you hear a young believer’s confession of faith and growing excitement at the work of Jesus Christ, you yourself are reignited in passion for the work of Christ.

Ask God, “who have You put in my life so that I can mentor that one?” Trust that the Spirit of God will lead you to the right one who is suited to learn from you and grow up in our precious faith. Everyone has something to teach. I remember as a young minister, being invited to the bedside of a dying woman. She was a strong believer. Her testimony to God’s goodness and desire to sing hymns even with her dying breaths impacted me so strongly. I was given a powerful impression of what a good death. Even at the time of dying Christ is adored and faith is becoming sight. In Mark 5 a man who’d had a legion of demons cast out of him was told by Jesus, go and tell your family and friends. All he knew is that Jesus healed him. That was enough. Whatever you know of Jesus is enough. Keep learning more. And keep sharing Him.

Go and serve your King!

What a tender title, to call You, Mighty God, Our Father! Thank You for those whom You have put into our lives who teach us to know You better. Blessed are You, Faithful LORD of Heaven and Earth, for sending Your Spirit to testify to Jesus--Who is The Way, The Truth and The Life--Who brings us without blemish or spot into Your presence. Forgive our tunnel vision focused on the things of this world. Broaden our vision, enlarge our hearts, so that the precious knowledge of Jesus Christ is what we teach and declare. Spirit of the Living God, help us to see who You have put in our path, who needs to know about Jesus and His great, sacrificial love. Let the testimony of Jesus and His love impact this generation and in turn may we teach others to deny themselves, take up their cross and follow Him--this, the greatest and highest and truest adventure of all life. Amen.

August 9, 2022 -- Ephesians 2:13 -- Every sin thrown down by the power of Jesus

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Ephesians 2:13 ESV

“Sin is a multi-dimensional reality. The Bible therefore has a wide variety of words to describe it. It follows that the work of salvation needs to be multi-dimensional in character. That is why the New Testament also describes the work of Christ in several different ways.”
Let’s Study Ephesians. Sinclair Ferguson. Carlisle, PA: THE BANNER OF TRUTH TRUST. reprinted 2015, p 59

Sin can be described as “missing the mark”. It is also moral evil. It is also violating God’s religious and moral law. It is lawlessness. It is malicious sinfulness. The Bible also describes some sins as those which are committed against other people; or against our own physical bodies. Evil thoughts and boastful hearts—all this too falls under the category of sin. What a wide and obscene capacity humans have for sinful actions, thoughts, deeds and good deeds left undone. Sins are great, but the salvation of Jesus Christ is greater still, wider, and far more powerful.

The passage today is a reminder of the Old Testament sacrifices. The guilty brought a lamb without defect to the priest. The guilty man confessed his sins and the lamb was slain. The lamb bore the guilt, the blood of the lamb pointed to the work of Jesus, and the man received the forgiveness. This was a symbol. An illustration of what would happen when Jesus died on the cross. He is the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. He is the final, complete, perfect sacrifice so no other blood needs to be spilled.

What sin haunts you? That persistent, relationship-breaking sin. That lingering memory of terrible things you have done. Whatever sin or wrong it is. Bring your broken-hearted, conscience-seared self to Jesus. Confess it. Believe that your sin is not greater, more complicated, different than the sins of any other. This is sinful pride which creeps in and tries to infect even your confession with the taint of wickedness. Do not believe it. In the quiet of your prayer time, ask the Spirit to show you the sins you are not aware of, the sins that block your prayer times and your full-joy in your walk with God.

The work of Jesus Christ throws down every sin. His work at the cross disarms Satan, the accuser, so that no accusation of wrong or sin or wickedness can stand against you. When you have confess your sin, be assured of these things: Christ has won the victory. Rejoice and praise Him. Leave the places or things that tempt you sin. Pray, daily, for the strength of the Spirit to renew in you the mind of Christ and the healing grace of God the Father.

It almost feels too embarrassing to be in prayer and admit my sin. Father in heaven, though there is no depth of darkness or shield I can put up to keep You from seeing and knowing my depravity, I fool myself into thinking You don't already know it. The fact is You have already seen to the bottom of of my wickedness. Your Word and Spirit brilliantly light up the dark corners of my heart and conscience so that relief can be found only in confession before Jesus' throne of grace. Thank You, Merciful Father, for the extravagant gift of Jesus Christ and His soul, mind, body, and creation-cleansing work. Forgive my reluctance to confess. Forgive my half-hearted confession and obsessive questions of whether or not the blood is enough. You have reconciled believers to Yourself by the blood of Jesus Christ, bringing them to full salvation. What is true about Jesus' reconciling work is true for me! Great are You Triune God. Beautiful. Truly, Jesus, You are the Desire of all nations, the Treasure of heaven and the Radiance of the Father's Glory.

August 7, 2022 -- I Chronicles 25:5-8 -- Trained for Worship

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

All these were the sons of Heman the king's seer, according to the promise of God to exalt him, for God had given Heman fourteen sons and three daughters. 6 They were all under the direction of their father in the music in the house of the LORD with cymbals, harps, and lyres for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun, and Heman were under the order of the king. 7 The number of them along with their brothers, who were trained in singing to the LORD, all who were skillful, was 288. 8 And they cast lots for their duties, small and great, teacher and pupil alike.
I Chronicles 25:5-8 ESV

There is a joke I’ve heard that goes something like this.
Speaker “I wanted to be a great musician.”
Friend “What happened?”
Speaker: “I wasn’t any good.”
Friend: “Well, then you could be a worship leader in our church.”

Ouch! Look at the Scrpture text again. Notice the emphasis on the skill of the musicians in the house of the LORD. They were trained in singing. There were teachers and pupils. Why does this matter? The work of worshiping the LORD is not a matter of slapping something together. He is great. Musicians and singers in the secular world spend many hours in training before joining orchestras. This dedicated time of training is all spent with the goal of becoming professional and thus giving audiences pleasure. The LORD our God is robed in splendor. He is the Great Audience of One, to Whom all effort and training must be directed.

The book of Leviticus, and here in I Chronicles, there are many chapters which go into finicky detail on how particular offerings and guard duties and the care of the holy things are to be performed in the worship of God. It is a sign of His glory, His majesty, and the worthiness of His Name. In view of Who He Is, His people must give to Him their very best.

Beloved, prepare your heart and mind for worship. Prepare to give to the LORD your God, your best service and your best gifts. Train up those who follow you, to be dedicated to the LORD your God. Jesus Christ has, by His great obedience and Self-sacrifice at the cross, taken away your sin and reproach. The Spirit of God has sealed in you the work of Jesus and given you as beloved sons and daughters of God the LORD—worship Him with your very best.

MIGHTY GOD,

I humble myself for faculties misused,
opportunities neglected,
words ill-advised,
I repent of my folly and inconsiderate ways,
my broken resolutions,
untrue service,
my backsliding steps,
my vain thoughts.
O bury my sins in the ocean of Jesus’ blood,
and let no evil result from my fretful temper,
unseemly behavior, provoking pettiness,
If by unkindness I have wounded or hurt another,
do thou pour in the balm of heavenly consolation;
If I have turned coldly from need, misery, grief,
do not in just anger forsake me:
If I have withheld relief from penury and pain,
do not withhold thy gracious bounty from me.
If I have shunned those who have offended me,
keep open the door of thy heart to my need.
Fill me with an overflowing ocean of compassion,
the reign of love my motive
the law of love my rule.
O thou God of all grace, make me more thankful,
more humble,
Inspire me with a deep sense of my unworthiness
arising from the depravity of my nature,
my omitted duties,
my unimproved advantages,
Thy commands violated by me.
With all my calls to gratitude and joy
may I remember that I have reason to sorrow and humiliation;
O give me repentance unto life;
Cement my oneness with my blessed Lord,
that faith may adhere to Him more immovably,
that love may entwine itself around Him more tightly,
that His spirit may pervade every fibre of my being.
Then send me out to make Him known to my fellow men.

August 5, 2022 -- Isaiah 66:1-2 -- One of the toughest topics: Humility

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Thus says the LORD:
“Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
and what is the place of my rest?
2 All these things my hand has made,
and so all these things came to be,
declares the Lord.
But this is the one to whom I will look:
he who is humble and contrite in spirit
and trembles at my word.
Isaiah 66:1-2 ESV

Dear family in Christ. Today’s devotional reflection is taken from Andrew Murray’s book: “Humility”. The whole devotion is a quotation. It was inspirational to me, so I share it with you. Shalom Richard

Under the banner of the truth, give yourself up to the meek and humble spirit of the holy Jesus. Humility must sow seed, or there can be no reaping in Heaven. Look not at pride only as an unbecoming temper, nor at humility only as a decent virtue: for the one is death, and the other is life; the one is all hell, the other is all heaven. So you as you have of pride within you, you have of the fallen angels alive in you; so much as you have of true humility, so much you have of the Lamb of God within you.

Could you see what every stirring of pride does to your soul, you would beg of everything you meet to tear the viper from you, though the loss of a hand or an eye. Could you see what a sweet, divine, transforming power there is in humility, how it expels the poison of your nature, and makes room for the Spirit of God to live in you, you would rather wish to be the footstool of all the world than want the smallest degree of it.

Spirit of Prayer. Pt. II, page 73. Edition of Moreton, Canterbury, 1893

O LORD,
I marvel that thou shouldst become incarnate,
be crucified, dead, and buried.
The sepulchre calls forth my adoring wonder,
for it is empty and thou art risen;
the four-fold gospel attests it,
the living witnesses prove it,
my heart’s experience knows it.
Give me to die with thee that I may rise to new life,
for I wish to be as dead and buried
to sin, to selfishness, to the world;
that I might not hear the voice of the charmer,
and might be delivered from his lusts.
O Lord, there is much ill about me – crucify it,
much flesh within me – mortify it.
Purge me from selfishness,
the fear of man, the love of approbation,
the shame of being thought old-fashioned,
the desire to be cultivated or modern.
Let me reckon my old life dead
because of crucifixion,
and never feed it as a living thing.
Grant me to stand with my dying Saviour,
to be content to be rejected,
to be willing to take up unpopular truths,
and to hold fast despised teachings until death.
Help me to be resolute and Christ-contained.
Never let me wander from the path of obedience to thy will.
Strengthen me for the battles ahead.
Give me courage for all the trials,
and grace for all the joys.
Help me to be a holy, happy person,
free from every wrong desire,
from everything contrary to thy mind.
Grant me more and more of the resurrection life:
may it rule me, may I walk in its power, and
be strengthened through its influence.

August 4, 2022 -- I Thessalonians 5:14-25 -- The work of being sanctified by the God of Peace

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. 15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. 22 Abstain from every form of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.
25 Brothers, pray for us.
I Thessalonians 5:14-25 ESV

You can see how Paul’s final words might cause the people of Thessalonica to be riled up a bit. If one brother goes to another and calls him, “Idle” and continues to say he is “not pulling his weight” there will be conflict. When one has suffered wrong, intentional or not, it is inappropriate to repay evil for evil. So, calling out a brother's response of evil towards evil received will stir up a reaction. Anything from "mind your own business" to venomous responses which threaten to spread the curse of evil.

You can see how members of this church, having holy boldness to correct a brother, might from that same brother receive sharp words and anger. It is hard work to be a faithful servant of Christ, and to live in community with other flawed men and women who are striving to be faithful in Christ. But those who have tasted and seen the glory of God, who know the treasured joy of salvation are prompted to abstain from all forms of evil. It is a high calling and it is hard work to live in community with people who are so different, but bound together by the Spirit.

How can we survive as believers and live in true community? Look at the rich blessing which ends this letter. It is the God of Peace Himself—Him Who is powerful enough to make you holy and willing to make Your holy. He sent His Son so that there’d be reconciliation between believers and Himself which is anchored in Christ. It is the God of Peace Who is faithful. He sent His Spirit so that individuals and communities as they live for Christ and interact with one another would be transformed to be more like Christ.

Look at verse 25. Paul, who wrote this letter and sent it with greetings from Silvanus and Timothy, is himself asking for prayer. He is aware how much he himself needs the peace-making and peace-keeping sanctifying work of God. It is a beautiful example of humility. He too is prepared to be submitted to God and the working of His Spirit.

God of Peace thank You for the great gift of Jesus Christ, Whom You sent as a demonstration of Your love and Your willingness to reconcile people to Yourself. Faithful Father, thank Your Spirit, Who takes the accomplished work of Jesus Christ and applies it so that individuals and communities experience whole spirit, soul, and body cleansing. Thank You that by the same Spirit Your chosen people are kept blameless. Triune God, thank You for displaying Your glory, Your patience, Your steadfast love and grace among real people in real time and in the real rough and tumble situations of life. Thank You that Your Gospel goes out in word and with Holy Spirit power. Heal Your people. Give the grace of humility so that in true community Your people will be imitators of Christ and prepared to endure much suffering all to the honour and glory of Your Great Name! Amen.

Mighty God, God of Peace, at the start of this new day, work in our hearts. By the powerful presence of Your Spirit break down strongholds of sinful pride and remove the stubborn unwillingness we nurse within ourselves which keeps us from seeking the good of others. Sanctify us, O God of Peace. Thank You that You are faithful. Thank You that You work out Your salvation so that it reaches the goal and perfection of Your design for us and for Your glory. Amen.

August 3, 2022 -- Romans 8:31-39 -- Teary-eyed conquerors through Him Who loves us

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;
    we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:31-39 ESV

Living for Jesus in real life is hard. One man I’ve worked closely with in my prison ministry time has disappeared. His family is afraid for his life. Another has turned his back on the treatment program and which had been a life-line for him. I remember standing at the graveside, more times than I care to count, tears in my eyes, nose running from wracking-grief-shared. Sometimes and in some circumstances death is a relief, but so many times, death is a brutal, bewildering intrusion. A nine day old infant, much anticipated and loved, being lowered into the ground as his towering father bends over in collapsing anguish. A young mom. A groom, just six weeks married, dead. His distraught wife, at the emergency room hearing news of his death in confusing and disbelieving repeatedly wails out, “but the wedding pictures arrived today. He hasn’t even seen them yet.”

What situation can wrest us from God’s protection. None! What situation is beyond the special pleading and intercessory work of Jesus—there is not one! Is there is special place of pain where the love of Christ stops short? Job loss? Mocking angel of death? Martyrdom? Fear? Grief? Financial ruin? War? This passage answers with a resounding NO!

Our lives are not our own. Our lives are lived under the watchful eye of our Sovereign King, the Good Shepherd. However long, or short, our lives this passage speaks directly to the weary soul. Be reminded, you are His people. Even your DNA has His language of love stamped into every one of your cells. He makes His claim over you. You mind might protest: How can this be true when the tears never seem to stop and the questions fill the soul with the relentlessness of tides? The Word of God answers: Nothing separates you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. The Spirit guards you in this love while you live. At the moment of death, the Son of God, Jesus the King, ushers you into glory, the great confirmation of His majestic work and brilliance of HIs saving grace as He presents you without spot or blemish in the presence of the Father.

King of kings and LORD of lords truly our lives and all the circumstances we face—all of these things are in Your hands. We do not see the grandeur of Your mighty plans nor can we fully understand the deep valleys of death and pain we must pass through. When the tears overwhelm us, thank You for the promise we are made for Your holy purposes. When the questions rush in, one after another, thank You Father, that Your Spirit still speaks to our crushed heart, tenderly saying, “Abba, Father”. The psalmist even says You gather up all our tears and keep them in a bottle (Psalm 56:8). You do not miss a thing, all sighs and groans and their accompanying tears, all these You have seen and in all of this You are tender until the rawness begins to heal. Faithful God, reminded this day of such deep things, by Your precious Word—the Living Word Jesus and written Word--we wait in hope for what we do not see now, we wait for it in patience. Quiet us with Your love until the sobbing stops and the peace beyond all understanding takes hold. Amen.

August 2, 2022 -- I Chronicles 12:38-40 -- God the Provider

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king. 39 And they were there with David for three days, eating and drinking, for their brothers had made preparation for them. 40 And also their relatives, from as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, came bringing food on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen, abundant provisions of flour, cakes of figs, clusters of raisins, and wine and oil, oxen and sheep, for there was joy in Israel.
I Chronicles 12:38-40 ESV

Now, isn’t that our God, the Provider? Mighty men of valor, commanders of hundreds and of thousands, were arriving from all the tribes of Israel to make David their king. A huge gathering, a powerful army is flowing into Hebron. As a child, and even as a young man, this captured my imagination. The people turning from allegiance to the family of King Saul and giving their allegiance to King David. A massive army is accruing, so my practical question was: what did they eat? For a long time I didn't really get an answer. I just figured it was taken care off. Today as I was reading this passage in my devotions the goodness of our God struck home to my head and heart. A question from my childhood was answered. How beautiful is the provision of our God!

Tribes and people as far as 80 KM away were preparing food for David’s army. I don’t know much about driving oxen and sheep. On-line research tells me that sheep can be driven up to 19KM a day. So, after messengers are sent out declaring the need, it would take time to gather provisions and then about an additional 5 days for provisions of sheep and oxen to arrive from the furthest reaches of Israel. God had prepared people in advance to supply the army so that His people, His mighty army, would not starve before the battle was even engaged. He moved the hearts of people to make available their gifts of grains and oils, flour and figs, sheep and oxen.

I believe our God continues to be the God Who knows the end from the beginning. He prepares people for His blessings and equips the saints that they may endure the times of trouble. Joys and sorrows, times of plenty and times of war, all of these are used so that His Great Name will be broadcast to the ends of the earth. As it was in the past, so it is today. God will work all things together so that the Name of Jesus, King David’s greatest descendant and the rightful, eternal King of Israel and of all the earth, will rule in power. The Spirit of God will continue to move the followers of King Jesus so that missionaries are provided for, finances are accrued and valiant men and women declare His goodness. As the Spirit prompts you today, give to the needs of missionaries. Pray. Write a letter (okay, text or email) of encouragement. Whatever ability God has given you, use it today for His glory.

Today’s prayer is a portion of David’s Song of Thanks.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength!
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him!
Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness;[b]
30 tremble before him, all the earth;
yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
and let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”
32 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it!
33 Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
34 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

“Save us, O God of our salvation,
    and gather and deliver us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.
36 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!”

Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

August 1, 2022 -- I Chronicles 6:31-38 -- Finding God's Goodness in a List of Names

These are the men whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord after the ark rested there. 32 They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they performed their service according to their order. 33 These are the men who served and their sons. Of the sons of the Kohathites: Heman the singer the son of Joel, son of Samuel, 34 son of Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Eliel, son of Toah, 35 son of Zuph, son of Elkanah, son of Mahath, son of Amasai, 36 son of Elkanah, son of Joel, son of Azariah, son of Zephaniah, 37 son of Tahath, son of Assir, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, 38 son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, son of Israel;
I Chronicles 6:31-38 ESV

It is a tough slog, reading through all the lists of names here in I Chronicles. There are about 14 chapters of them. Usually I just want to skip over them. But I don't. This morning the genealogy of Samuel grabbed my attention. Samuel was faithful, but his sons were not. “Yet his sons did not walk in his ways but turned aside after gain. They took bribes and perverted justice” (I Samuel 8:3). What is amazing is that Joel is one of Samuel’s sons. The unfaithful father, Joel, has a son Heman. Heman is appointed a singer in the temple of God. What restoration must have taken place in this family!

There, in the lists of names, a grand sweep of history is laid out, and in this one can see the steadfast love of God. His work in and through the generations is made clear. Look at the mercy of God, as sons of those who pervert justice are cleansed, renewed and restored for holy service.

It is beautiful as well to read that King David appointed worship leaders, song-writers and singers who would perform sacred music in the temple. What a blessing that is. Many of the psalms were written as sacred music for the people. They give voice to the joys and sorrows, aspirations and longings of the people.

Thanks be to God that His is in charge of the generations. Thanks be to God that He restores families and brings back sons and daughters to faithfulness. Thanks be to God that those seemingly endless (and perhaps, to our cynical way of thinking pointless) lists of names and generations actually serves the purpose of showing us our Father’s mighty, tender, compassionate care that goes to every generation and every person in every generation. Surely He knows every single person who lived, lives and will live, and He has His purposes for each one. Blessed is our God!

Though all might be faithless and perverted, You, Holy One, are True and Faithful. You are the Blessed One, Who sends His Spirit to bring back the wayward. You have sought the lost and brought them to Yourself through the reconciling work of Jesus Christ! Honour and praise, worship and blessing belong to You through-out endless ages. Thank You, Mighty God, that You know each person in every age and You know the generations and You are working out Your wonderful purposes. Amen.

July 29, 2022 -- Ephesians 4:25-32 -- Taking out the trash

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
Ephesians 4:25-32 ESV

The picture here is of human lives, formerly erratic and disordered by sin, made into orderly hearts and minds ruled by Christ. Consider all the effects and trouble caused by our sins. Falsehood, the chaos of the tongue which seeks to disorder truth and dishevels workplaces and upends trust, must be cleared away. It must be put away, like the trash it is and thrown to the curb. Anger opens the mouth to release a firehose of rhetoric that bowls people over and causes damage that can take years to mend. Thievery upsets relationships, trust, community, peace and a sense of safety. Corrupting talk while enjoyed for a moment when the venom is poured out on others, leaves participants in a conversation wondering, when I get up to go, will this group of vipers be trash talking me? (Yes. Yes they will, corrupting talk is contagious and spreads faster than the latest variants of viruses).

Reading this list of sins makes me shudder. I have a live example of chaos all around me. There are books left open on the desk, used for the latest sermon. A few on the floor, closed, but not put away back on the shelf. There are three piles of papers, one for the studies at one prison, another for the studies at a recovery centre, and a third pile for a different study at another institution. Unfortunately, when I set down my carrying case, the three piles shifted, fell, and scattered. I had to leave before the mess was cleaned up. There is yarn, donated by friends, which is unsorted, and cluttering up the study—I crochet blankets, sending the completed ones to a seminary in the Ukraine—and an unfinished project in the centre of the floor. It is a mess. To me, the study as it is, is a living depiction the text—all kinds of things open, upended, cluttering, not sorted and bagged up to be put away. It is an overwhelming mess and I fell like I don't even know were to start.

Thankfully, even if I don’t know where to begin, God does. The Spirit has been sent by the Father to believers in Christ. The Spirit who can be grieved by our anger, corrupting talk, thieving, and all the chaos sins brings with it into our lives that is spilling into the lives of churches and workplaces contaminating many places, is All-Mighty. The Spirit begins the project of massive clean-up and renovation. The Spirit of God applies the healing work of Jesus so that our lives are purified, cleansed from top to bottom, inside and out. It is too overwhelming for us to do on our own. It is not something we want to do, unless Christ is front and centre in both our faith and our desires. It is the Spirit Who revives our faith. It is the Spirit to renews our desires. When we see the mess we have made of our life, family, community, work and future, do not despair. Recognizing the mess that is the first step. Confess your need to God for His renewing work. Ask for new life which is based on the work of Jesus. Know that the renewing holiness which the Spirit of God has the power to effect in your life, will be brought to completion. Yield yourself to God. Pray for this clean-up work in your life, your family and your church.

God, the Mighty One, Who brought order at the start of Creation, thank You for the cross. Thank You for Christ, the Holy One, Who faced the ruination brought by Adam’s sin and the devil’s manipulations and for the fact that at the cross Jesus defeated all the powers of sin, death, the Fall and all its consequences. Thank You, Jesus, for taking my place, bearing the anger of God against all my sin. Blessed are You, gracious God, for giving the Spirit, Who is taking the finished work of Christ and applying it to every aspect of my life. I freely acknowledge the ruin of sin. I see the chaos of my own actions, and inaction, where there are so many piles of things and strewn things I don’t even know where to begin with the clean-up. Thank You, that You, in Your power, love and kindness, will bring the order. I yield myself to You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Forgive me for work undone. Forgive me to getting in the way. Forgive me for trying to fix things on my own and making greater tangles and messes. Thank You, Triune God, for the miracle of salvation and the depths and width and breadth and height of Your loving kindness poured out on those who have been brought to faith in Your great Name. As Your forgiving work is kneaded and pressed into every huge crevasse and each tiny corner of our lives, may we in turn, be a people set apart for Christ, who show Your work in us this by the kindness we show to others. May we shine with Your forgiving love. May we, having been cleansed, seeing the trash taken out of our own lives, be patient with those around us, people who are now themselves awaiting garbage day and the mighty work of Your Spirit. Father, renew us, by Your Spirit, make us, individually and all of us together, pure and ready witnesses to Jesus work even as now we excitedly anticipate Jesus’ return. Amen.

July 27, 2022 -- II Kings 16:2-3a -- Will They Do What Is Right in the Eyes of the LORD?

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. And he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his God, as David his father had done, but he walked in the way of the things of Israel.
II Kings 16:2-3a ESV

The father of Ahaz was Jotham. King Jotham did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. It is strange how regularly the sons of godly kings do not do what is right in the eyes of the LORD. In fact, a godly father does not necessarily have a godly son to follow him. So often that terrible phrase is recited in the Books of the Kings, “and he did not do what was right in the eyes of the LORD his God".

Faithful and faithless leaders are accountable to the Ruler of Heaven and Earth. Just because a leader refuses to acknowledge the LORD of God that doesn’t mean his life and all his actions will be exempted from the LORD's judgment! He Who made the heavens and the earth has the right, in fact, He is obliged, to uphold the standards of perfection and holiness which are in accord with His nature.

Fathers and mothers, raise your children and grandchildren to know the LORD. It is not something they will naturally turn to on their own. The heart is wicked and deceitful, inclined to all kinds of evil. It will take years of patient, godly instruction to raise up children who know and love the LORD.

Church members and extended family members, bless the children and young adults whom God has placed in your life. Speak to them about the love of God. Tell them of His justice and His right to command holy living. An artist has the right to do what he wishes to with his canvas. An intruder is accused of defacing the art work if he applies paint, lines, or colours that the original Master didn't. The LORD is the Mighty Artist, the Creator-Genius—true wisdom is to acknowledge His artistry and to align one’s life so that every step is in keeping with His design. It is joy and wisdom to teach others to admire Him, worship Him and to help them to walk every step according to His awesome design.

Creator God—how beautiful and masterful is Your handiwork. The heavens declare Your glory. The earth is filled with evidences of Your goodness. The bright plumages of the birds display Your genius. The deep ocean creatures, hidden from the eyes of man, are made for Your delight. Teach us, LORD of Glory, to walk according to Your grand design and to submit both will and life to You. May many see in us a dedication to doing what is right in Your eyes, so that they too will rise up and bless You. Forgive us, when our words say one thing and our actions make our words meaningless and empty. Forgive us for the way in which this brings the Name of Jesus into disrepute. Renew in us Spirit of the Living God, joy and an abiding, sustained endurance to walk the path of righteousness. Mighty God, guard our children and young adults from the temptations of the world and the wiles of the devil. Give to our children and the young adults within our Christian community the example of saints who love You and the ability for these same children and youth to ask questions, to imitate and to grow in rich storehouse of blessings you have prepared for all who love You. This we pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

July 25, 2022 -- Deep cleansing confession -- I John 1:7-9

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
I John 1:7-9 ESV

What blocks your walk with fellow Christians and blocks your walk with God the Father? According to John, the one who walked with Jesus Christ during Jesus’ earthly ministry, it is unconfessed sin. Such sins make believers walk in darkness, stumbling around. Struggling to see the point of anything. Sin is like a cave-in where boulders and dirt cascade down blocking the entrance to the light, leaving the sinner in a dark tunnel, starving for light, air, water, and food. Confession is the dynamite the Spirit uses to blast through all the detritus, which is too much for the believer to clear away on his own. It takes the All-Mighty power of the Spirit to clear the heart. What a promise is offered today, confess you sins, for He IS faithful and just to forgive you and cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

MERCIFUL LORD,
Pardon all my sins of this day, week, year,
all the sins of my life,
sins of early, middle, and advanced years,
of omission and commission,
of morose, peevish and angry tempers,
of lip, life and walk,
of hard-heartedness, unbelief, presumption, pride,
of unfaithfulness to the souls of men,
of want of bold decision in the cause of Christ,
of deficiency in outspoken zeal for his glory,
of bringing dishonour upon thy great name,
of deception, injustice, untruthfulness
   in my dealings with others,
of impurity in thought, word and deed,
of covetousness, which is idolatry,
of substance unduly hoarded, improvidently squandered,
   not consecrated to the glory of thee, the great Giver;
sins in private and in the family,
in study and recreation, in the busy haunts of men,
in the study of thy Word and in the neglect of it,
in prayer irreverently offered and coldly withheld,
in time misspent, in yielding to Satan’s wiles,
in opening my heart to his temptations,
in being unwatchful when I know him nigh,
in quenching the Holy Spirit;
sins against light and knowledge,
against conscience and the restraints of thy Spirit,
against the law of eternal love.
Pardon all my sins, known and unknown,
felt and unfelt, confessed and not confessed,
remembered or forgotten.
Good Lord, hear;
 and hearing, forgive.

July 23, 2022 -- II Corinthians 8:16-18 -- Not jealous of others but together zealous for Jesus

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power:  Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. 17 For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest he is going to you of his own accord. 18 With him we are sending the brother who is famous among all the churches for his preaching of the gospel.
II Corinthians 8:16-18 ESV

In past devotions I have remarked on the richness of Scripture. It is wonderful, the creative work of God, that very familiar passages can sparkle with new brilliance by the appointment of the Spirit. This morning’s reading is one such passage. Here is why it stood out to me. Paul, a preacher-apologist, is commending the work of another preacher. By the grace of the Spirit he is so fixed on the good of the Corinthian congregation that he is not jealous of the gifts Titus has been given. Paul  gives thanks to God for those gifts, recognizing Titus will use them to minister to the Corinthians.

Paul had spent a lot of time among the Corinthians. Many preachers and evangelists can suffer from a sense of self-importance—thinking in their heart "only I can help this particular group of people, I know their needs." Paul has humbled himself before Jesus, the Lord of the Church, and rejoices that the Savior has, by His Spirit, appointed a gifted (even famously gifted) preacher to work among the Corinthians. What does this have to do with you?

Bless God and thank Him, as a parent, for those in your circle of family and friends who are ministering to your children. It is the kindness of God to have others who are earnest for your children’s salvation and that He should bring them into your life to walk alongside of you. Give thanks to God for the areas in your life where you serve God and when He shows you others who are co-laborers. For their presence and their work, honour God and thank Him. In the places where you serve and you have not discovered other Christians there, pray that God, the LORD of the Church, will raise up fellow Christians, so that His influence will be felt through your ministry. A Christian can be used in any setting, serving there by God's appointment Humble yourself before God and ask the Spirit where in your life you are jealous with a world-infected envy of the gifts of others rather than rejoicing in their talents. Where are your thoughts and comments sharp and cutting because of jealousy that spills over. Confess such sins. It is the LORD Who will extend His Church, He is bringing in the saints, through your labor and theirs, so that all of us, empowered by the Spirit should honour the Father for the tremendous privilege of being a workers in vineyard who name the Name of Jesus wherever we go.

The prayer today is the wonderful hymn "From Ocean unto Ocean". It is hard to find a video version of this. I hope you can listen to the music and read the prayer, or sing it! At the link, there is a place where you can click in order to listen to the audio files of this hymn. If not, be blessed by the poetic prayer as you read it.

1 From ocean unto ocean our land shall name you, Lord
and, filled with true devotion, obey your sovereign Word.
Our prairies and our mountains, the forest, fertile field,
our rivers, lakes, and fountains to you shall tribute yield.

2 O Christ, for your own glory and for our country's weal;
we humbly plead before you: yourself in us reveal.
And may we know, Lord Jesus, the touch of your dear hand,
and, healed of our diseases, the tempter's power withstand.

3 Where error smites with blindness, enslaves, and leads astray,
proclaim in loving-kindness your joyful gospel day,
till all the tribes and races that dwell in this fair land,
adorned with Christian graces, within your courts shall stand.

4 Our Savior King, defend us and guide where we should go;
forth with your message send us, your love and light to show,
till, fired with true devotion and kindled by your Word,
from ocean unto ocean our land shall name you Lord.

July 22, 2022 -- Proverbs 28:9 -- Prayer and bible reading are tightly connected

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

If one turns away his ear from hearing the law,
   even his prayer is an abomination.
Proverbs 28:9 ESV

If your law had not been my delight,
   I would have perished in my affliction.
Psalm 119:92 ESV

How is prayer connected to the Word of God? These two passages show us the strong link between the believer’s interest in the Word of God and the believer’s prayer life. More than this even, these verses graphically reveals how God reacts to the prayers of the believer who refuses to submit themselves to His Word.

Here in the Old Testament 'the law' refers to the all that God has to say to His people. It is His instruction. It is the pointer to Christ. It is the instruction in holy living. When one neglects the Word of God, then even his prayers are an abomination. That is very strong word!

In the Bible God the LORD calls the sacrifice of a wicked man an abomination (Proverbs 21:27). It is counted as a vile or disgusting thing. Unchastity—sinning sexually—that too is an abomination to the LORD (Leviticus 18:22). It is critical to know what God hates. Those who know God and love Him are compelled by love to honour Him with their lips, life and language.

Ask yourself, what is blocking your prayer life? Is there unconfessed sin? Is your prayer hindered because you are not reading the Bible? Is your prayer life hindered because you have not prayed and the prayerless days have accumulated? Then start once again today. Pick up your conversation with God. Have formal times of prayer and informally, through-out the day, remind yourself He is near, and bless Him, speak to Him, thank Him for whatever is going on in your life.

O LORD, sustain me under my trials
   and improve me through them.
Give me grace to rest in You
   and by Your Word and Spirit
   assure me of Your deliverance.

May my imagination always combine
   Your majesty with Your mercy,
and connect Your goodness with Your greatness.
Then my heart will always rejoice in praise to You! Amen.

July 21, 2022 -- II Corinthians 6:1-10 -- The weapons of righteousness

People loved by the Father, in the Spirit's power: Sh'ma ~ hear and obey Jesus!

Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,
    and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, the Holy Spirit, genuine love; by truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.
II Corinthians 6:1-10 ESV

Notice the weapons of the Christian who works for God, declaring His salvation to anyone he meets and in whatever circumstance he encounters the one to be evangelized: righteousness. Both the right hand and the left hand are to employ the weapons of righteousness. Righteousness in the life of the Christian is the hour by hour, day by day work of making God’s way his way in every circumstance and at every opportunity. When others slander you, utilizing truthful speech is the weapon of righteousness. When others falsely praise you, flattering in order to make gains for themselves, genuine love is the response of righteousness. Making God’s way one’s own way means to be prepared for a long struggle, so one must have, as verse 4 puts its, great endurance. It is a battle. It is the life-long battle of the Christian to declare the Name of the King of Kings and LORD of lords to a world that hates Him and defies Him.

In the eyes of the world believers have nothing—no position, no power, no wealth, no honour. But as those wielding the weapons of righteousness Christians have everything—life that is secure by the Spirit right now and such life will become eternal life in the New Heavens and the New Earth and this because of the blood of Jesus Christ! There is no greater possession. This is what emboldens Christians to speak. And it is the righteousness of God which covers believers. God’s righteousness is a protection for believers, His goodness poured out in Christ and every divine gift ensured by the Spirit’s presence in the believer. God’s righteousness means judgment and hell for those who oppose God and His people. That is why today is a favorable time. Those who had long fought against Christians, those who were once wicked, are now given an opportunity to lay down their arms and forego their opposition and take up righteousness, in the right hand and their left hand. They would do so because of the persistent testimony of Christians who will not give ground, no matter the hardships, because these Christians had within them the power of God. The day of Jesus' return is very near. When He returns, the Day of Salvation will be gone and every enemy of the King of Glory will be thrown down. Fellow Christians, press on, declare Jesus' goodness. Appeal to the people in your life  so that they will receive the grace of God given in Christ Jesus and this by the power of the Spirit.

MIGHTY GOD,
I humble myself for faculties misused, opportunities neglected,
words ill-advised,
I repent of my folly and inconsiderate ways,
my broken resolutions, untrue service,
my backsliding steps, my vain thoughts.
O bury my sins in the ocean of Jesus’ blood,
and let no evil result from my fretful temper,
unseemly behavior, provoking pettiness,I
f by unkindness I have wounded or hurt another,
do thou pour in the balm of heavenly consolation;
If I have turned coldly from need, misery, grief,
do not in just anger forsake me:
If I have withheld relief from penury and pain,
do not withhold thy gracious bounty from me.
If I have shunned those who have offended me,
keep open the door of thy heart to my need.
Fill me with an overflowing ocean of compassion,
the reign of love my motive,
the law of love my rule.
O thou God of all grace, make me more thankful,
more humble, inspire me with a deep sense of my unworthiness
arising from the depravity of my nature, my omitted duties,
my unimproved advantages, Thy commands violated by me.
With all my calls to gratitude and joy may I remember
that I have reason to sorrow and humiliation;
O give me repentance unto life;
Cement my oneness with my blessed Lord,
that faith may adhere to Him more immovably,
that love may entwine itself around Him more tightly,
that His spirit may pervade every fibre of my being.
Then send me out to make Him known to my fellow men.
